Bag or Open Stock? A Resource Reserve Guide

Learn when to use resource items, how to read Vault protection, and how to set aside resources for healing before war.

Bag or Open Stock? A Resource Reserve Guide
IN SHORT
  • Count resources in your bag separately from open stock; use only what you need.
  • Check Vault protection for each resource type and limit unprotected stock.
  • Set aside resources for possible healing costs before starting construction or research.

With KvK approaching, having resources in your castle is good news. Keeping all of them in open stock is a separate decision. If you use the resource items you saved for research too early, you need to consider how much of that stock will be protected when war breaks out. On the other hand, keeping everything in your bag without preparing for wounded troops can leave you unable to start healing at a critical moment.

A good Lords Mobile resource plan accounts not just for how much you gather, but also where your resources are and when you will spend them. For tile selection and march safety, see the separate resource gathering guide. Here, the focus is what happens after gathering: managing your stock through a war.

Count Bag Resources and Open Stock Separately

A resource item in your bag is not part of your open stock. When you need it, you use the item to add resources to your castle. Open stock is what you see on spending screens and what you must account for when assessing attack risk. Treating both figures as one total can mislead you, especially when several large expenses are coming up.

Suppose a building upgrade requires 8 million stone, you have 2 million stone in open stock, and your bag holds items worth 7 million stone. You have enough in total, but not enough open stock to start. If you use the closest suitable combination of items to add roughly 6 million stone and start construction immediately, you avoid exposing the rest of your bag resources unnecessarily. If your item sizes do not add up exactly, account for the excess you will open.

Keep two figures for each resource type: open stock you can spend now and bag stock you can open when needed. Extra food will not cover a stone shortage; do not reduce everything to one number. When choosing between two expenses, first check which one you can actually start.

Decide based on where your resources are

Resource statusWhat to checkPractical decision
Item in your bagDo not include it in open stockKeep it until needed for an expense
Open stock within protectionCheck Vault protection in-gameMatch spendable stock to the expense
Open stock above protectionAssess raid risk separatelyDo not increase it unnecessarily

Factor Vault Protection Into Raid Risk

The Vault protects part of your open stock; check the protected amount shown in your current game state. Verify the protection conditions for gold separately. A resource item in your bag and protected open stock in your Vault are not the same thing: one has not been used, while the other has been added to your castle’s stock but falls within the protection limit.

Say your castle has 5 million wood in open stock and the Vault protection shown for wood is 1.5 million. That does not mean you will automatically lose the remaining 3.5 million, but you cannot count it as protected when assessing raid risk. If you will be offline for a while, ask: “Am I about to spend this wood?” If the answer is no, there is no reason to use more bag items early.

A Vault figure does not make your castle resistant to attacks. Resource protection is not troop protection. Check your shield, troop safety, and Infirmary capacity separately. Rather than relying on one defensive decision to protect a large stockpile, limit unnecessary open stock and time your next expense.

Keep a Healing Reserve Separate From Your Build Budget

During a war week, construction and research are not your only resource costs. Healing wounded troops takes resources and time, and Infirmary capacity matters too. “I have enough for research” does not mean “I am ready for what happens after a fight.” You can review troop safety and Infirmary capacity in the pre-KvK troop safety guide.

Try a simple budget. If your next research requires 10 million wood and you decide to reserve 3 million wood for healing, subtract that reserve when calculating spendable wood. If your open stock and bag items add up to 12 million wood, you may be able to start the research, but you cannot also keep the full 3 million ready for healing. Postpone the research or plan how to cover the gap. These are example budget figures; check your actual healing needs in-game based on your troops and circumstances.

Before war, your goal may be to keep enough resources to recover from losses, not to finish the biggest research project.

If gathering and bag stock cannot cover the shortfall, ready-made resource packs are available on our site: RSS resource packs. First identify which resource type you lack; budgeting for one you do not need will not solve a healing shortage.

Pre-expense budget check

  • List required resources by type.
  • Subtract your healing reserve from the spendable total.
  • Plan to gather resources or use bag items to cover any shortfall.
  • After starting the expense, check your remaining open stock again.

Use a Three-Step Routine Before Opening Resources

The safest habit is to tie resource-item use to a specific expense, rather than opening everything because you might need it someday. If you are starting construction in a few minutes, open what it requires. If you have not chosen an expense, leave your bag alone.

  1. Choose the expense: For a building upgrade, note the required food, wood, stone, and ore separately. Having enough of three out of four resources will not let you start it.
  2. Calculate the shortfall: Subtract usable open stock from the required amount. If you need 4 million ore and have 1 million in open stock, aim to open roughly 3 million ore, allowing for your item sizes.
  3. Open and spend immediately: Do not delay the expense after using the items. Then recheck your remaining open stock and healing reserve; run the calculation again for your next expense.

This routine helps during war as well. If a rally is possible, check what is happening around you before opening a large amount of resources and getting distracted. LordsRally sends shield-drop and rally alerts from the kingdom to your WhatsApp or Telegram group to help you follow the fight; it does not manage resource items for you. See the available tools on the commands page and alert coverage on the features page.

Set a Reserve Order for Your Guild

Do not treat one player’s resources and the entire guild’s war expenses as interchangeable. As an R4 or R5, instead of asking members for a single “How many million RSS do you have?” figure before an event, ask for three separate numbers: stock that can stay in the bag, stock available immediately, and the amount reserved for healing. You can then spot a member who looks well supplied on paper but would have to open all their resources to heal wounded troops.

For example, three players may each have resources worth 5 million stone, giving an apparent total of 15 million stone. But one has earmarked it for research, another is keeping it in their bag, and the third needs to prioritize healing. Those stocks are not all available for a shared guild expense at the same time. First discuss who is fighting, who needs a recovery reserve, and which upgrades can wait.

Your daily decision order can be short: check healing and safety needs → choose the next necessary expense → open only enough to cover the shortfall → recalculate the remaining reserve. Browse the blog archive for other game plans. This order matters as much as gathering more: resources opened at the wrong time are less flexible than items waiting in your bag.

Share your resource plan with your guild. If you want to discuss how war alerts fit into that plan, get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can resources in my bag be looted?

Resource items do not count as open stock while they remain in your bag. Once you use an item and add its resources to your castle, recalculate your open stock and Vault protection.

Does the Vault protect all my open resources?

No. Check the protected amount in-game for each resource type and your current conditions; check gold separately. Do not assume stock above the protection limit is guaranteed safe.

Should I prioritize research or a healing reserve before war?

If you expect a fight soon, first decide how much to set aside for potential wounded troops. Then determine whether you can start the research with what remains.
